you’ll take it to someone who knows how to maintain them to figure out what’s wrong. when it stops running and restart it.

Certified Network Associate training is the same as with Certified Network Associate devices – you need to know all about their major components, parts and pieces, as well as what they do and why and how they all work together to make the network work WHAT IS BOOT SEQUENCE OF ROUTER 2023.

The more solid your knowledge, the more proficient you are in these matters and the better equipped you will be to configure and troubleshoot your Cisco network. To achieve this goal, review the introductory description of the main components of a Cisco router. You need to complete Delhi Network Training or Delhi Network Certification with following table.

WHAT IS BOOT SEQUENCE OF ROUTER 2023 Bootstrap Bootstrap, which is stored in the ROM microcode, is used to start the router during initialization. It starts the router and then loads the IOS.

POST (power-on self-test) POST, also stored in the ROM microcode, is used to check the basic functionality of the router’s hardware and determine which interfaces are present.

ROM Monitor Again, stored in the ROM microcode, the ROM monitor is used for production, testing, and troubleshooting, as well as for starting a mini-IOS when the flashed IOS fails to load. CCNA certification in Delhi teaches how it differs from the usual RAM that you use in your personal computers or how you can usually relate to it WHAT IS BOOT SEQUENCE OF ROUTER 2023.

A Cisco mini-IOS called RXBOOT or bootloader. Mini-IOS is a small IOS in ROM that can be used to bring up the interface and load Cisco IOS into flash memory. Mini-IOS can also perform several other maintenance operations.

RAM (Random Access Memory) Used to store the packet buffer, ARP cache, routing tables, as well as the software and data structures that enable the router to function. Running-config is stored in RAM and most routers will expand the IOS from flash to RAM on boot.

Flash Memory Stores Cisco IOS by default. The flash memory is not erased when the router is reloaded. It is an EEPROM (Electronically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory) made by Intel. NVRAM (Independent RAM) Used to store router and switch configuration. NVRAM is not cleared when the router or switch is reloaded. It does not store IOS. The configuration register is stored in NVRAM. Configuration register Used to control router startup. This value is found on the last line of the show version output and is set to 0x2102 by default, which tells the router to load the IOS from flash and also to load the configuration from NVRAM WHAT IS BOOT SEQUENCE OF ROUTER 2023.

Router and switch startup sequence WHAT IS BOOT SEQUENCE OF ROUTER 2023.

When a Cisco device starts up, it performs a series of steps, called boot sequences, to test the hardware and load the necessary software.

The boot sequence contains the following

steps: 1. The IOS device will perform a POST test that tests the hardware and verifies that all device components are present and functional. The post takes an inventory of the various interfaces on the switch or router and is stored and executed from read-only memory (ROM) WHAT IS BOOT SEQUENCE OF ROUTER 2023.

Step 2: The ROM bootstrap then locates and loads the Cisco IOS software by running the programs responsible for finding out where each IOS program is located. Once found, it will load the correct files. By default, IOS software is loaded from flash memory on all Cisco devices. The default IOS loading order from a Cisco device starts with the flash, then the TFTP server, and finally the ROM.

Step 3. The IOS software then searches for a valid configuration file stored in NVRAM. This file is called startup-config and will only be present if the administrator has copied the running-config file to NVRAM WHAT IS BOOT SEQUENCE OF ROUTER 2023.

Step 4. If a running configuration file is found in NVRAM, the router or switch copies it, places it in RAM, and names the file running-config. The device will use this file to boot and the router/switch should now be functional. If no startup configuration file is found in NVRAM, the router/switch will respond by broadcasting any interface that detects the carrier (CD) to find the TFTP host while searching for the configuration. When that fails, which it usually does, the device starts the setup mode configuration process. Most people don’t even realize that the device has attempted this process, which can be summed up if you get down to it

Certified Network Associate training, stay on top of what’s going on.

When a Cisco router starts up, it goes through a series of steps, called the router boot sequence, to test the hardware and load the necessary software WHAT IS BOOT SEQUENCE OF ROUTER 2023.

The startup sequence of a Cisco router consists of the following steps:

1. The router will perform a POST (Power On Self Test). POST (Power On Self Test) tests the hardware to verify that all components of the device are functional and present. For example, POST checks the various interfaces on the router. POST is stored and executed from ROM (read-only memory) WHAT IS BOOT SEQUENCE OF ROUTER 2023.

2. The bootstrap program (Bootstrap is a program in ROM that is used to run programs) checks the value of the Configuration Register to determine where to load the IOS. The default configuration register value is 0x2102 (hexadecimal value). A configuration register value of 0x2102 means that the router should load the Cisco IOS software image from flash memory and load the startup configuration with a console rate of 9600 baud. Bootstrap will search for and load Cisco IOS software from flash if the configuration register value is 0x2102.

The Bootstrap program is responsible for initializing the hardware and finding the location of the IOS program and then loading the IOS image. By default, IOS software is loaded from flash memory on all Cisco routers. Another possible location of the IOS image is a TFTP (Trivial File Transfer Protocol) server configured on the computer.

If Bootstrap is unable to find a valid IOS image, it will act as ROM Monitor. ROM Monitor is able to provide a command line environment that can be used to perform certain configuration tasks such as downloading an IOS image using TFTP, recovering a lost password, changing the configuration registry value, etc WHAT IS BOOT SEQUENCE OF ROUTER 2023.

3. The IOS software looks for a valid configuration file stored in NVRAM. This file is called startup-config.

4. If a Startup Configuration (startup-config) file is present in NVRAM, the router reads and applies the configuration commands in the Startup Configuration (startup-config) file. If a valid Startup Configuration file (startup-config) is not in NVRAM, IOS displays the System Configuration settings.

5. After the startup-config is loaded, the IOS will display the CLI in user mode WHAT IS BOOT SEQUENCE OF ROUTER 2023.

Before we get into the router boot process in detail, let’s first get familiar with the following boot components:-

ROM
The ROM (Read Only Memory) stores four POST components, the Bootstrap program, ROMMON mode, and Mini IOS.

POST
POST (Power on self test) is a low-level diagnostic tool that performs various tests on hardware components. It verifies that all necessary components are present and functional. The modular slots are checked in this process for any hardware change, such as installing a new interface or removing existing interfaces WHAT IS BOOT SEQUENCE OF ROUTER 2023.

Bootstrap
Bootstrap is the second tool in the boot order. Controls the IOS search and loading process. The Bootstrap program is responsible for starting the router, searching for IOS in all possible locations and loading it into RAM.

ROMMON
ROMMON is a portable IOS program that allows us to perform various diagnostic tests. This program is also used for the password recovery procedure. It has its own mode (For more about Cisco IOS mode see our previous article) known as ROMMON mode. The boot sequence follows a conditional rule for this mode. If bootstrap succeeds in finding and loading the IOS operation, then the boot sequence will not enter in this mode. The boot sequence enters this mode automatically if it fails to load the IOS into RAM from all possible locations.

You can enter this mode manually for diagnostic purposes. Run the reload command from privileged mode and reboot the router. Press + C (CTRL + C) during the first 60 seconds of the boot sequence WHAT IS BOOT SEQUENCE OF ROUTER 2023.

Mini-IOS

Mini-IOS is a backup tool that contains a stripped down version of IOS. This is used in critical situations where the IOS image in the flash is not found. Mini-IOS only contains IP code that allows you to load IOS from other sources such as a TFTP Server. The Cisco IOS mode used by this deprecated IOS utility known as RXBOOT mode.

Flash
Flash is non-volatile memory. The flash data storage is not lost when the router is turned off. You can think of the flash as the hard drive of the router. Just like data stored on a hard drive stays safe, just like data stored on a flash drive stays safe. The router uses flash to store the IOS image. During the boot process, the router loads the IOS file from flash to ram WHAT IS BOOT SEQUENCE OF ROUTER 2023.

NVRAM
NVRAM is another non-volatile memory. Data stored in NVRAM also remains safe. The router uses NVRAM to store configuration files. NVRAM uses the battery to retain data during the shutdown phase.

FRAME
RAM is temporary memory. Information stored in RAM does not remain in the shutdown phase. After turning off the router, everything in the RAM is deleted. RAM is the fastest memory among these memories. When the router is turned on, the RAM contains all the information needed for the device to function.

During the boot process, the IOS is copied and decompressed into RAM from Flash.
Like the ISO, the boot configuration is also copied to RAM from NVRAM.
RAM stores ARP, CDP neighbor, routing and other tables.
The interface input and output buffers are also stored in RAM WHAT IS BOOT SEQUENCE OF ROUTER 2023.
Configuration register value
The configuration register value is a special register that is used to control the boot process. You can check the current value of the configuration register with the command “show version” from the exec mode.

Configuration register value

This is a four-character hexadecimal value that can be changed from privileged mode.
The default value is 0x2102.
“0x” means that the following characters are in hexadecimal.
The third character in the configuration register can change the way the router loads the configuration file.
The fourth character in the configuration register is known as the boot field. Changing this value changes the boot process.
Setting 0x2100 will always boot the router in ROMMON mode WHAT IS BOOT SEQUENCE OF ROUTER 2023.
Setting 0x2101 will always boot the router in RXBOOT mode.
Setting 0x2102 to 0x210F always loads the first valid IOS from flash.
values 2 through F for the fourth character specify additional IOS image files in flash.
The router stores the password in a boot configuration file that is stored in NVRAM.
Setting 0x2142 causes the router to ignore the startup configuration file in NVRAM and continue without configuration. So setting 0x2142 is used for router password reset process.
So far in this tutorial we have learned the components of booting a router. In the next section, we will learn how these components are involved in the router startup process.

Router startup process
The router goes through three steps during startup

POST (power-on self-test)
Find and load IOS
Locate and run the device configuration file
Router startup process

The router is on WHAT IS BOOT SEQUENCE OF ROUTER 2023.
Power on self test (POST) is performed to check hardware components including memory and interface.
The Bootstrap program is loaded and run.
Bootstrap reads the configuration registry value to determine how the router boots.
Depending on the value of the bootstrap configuration register, the program finds and loads the IOS image.
If bootstrap fails to load the IOS from all possible locations, it will dump the boot sequence in ROMMON mode for troubleshooting.
If the IOS is loaded, the IOS will try to find and load the configuration.
If no configuration is specified, the system configuration dialog box opens.
If the configuration is loaded, you will be presented with the CLI.
The following figure explains the above process step by step WHAT IS BOOT SEQUENCE OF ROUTER 2023.
